Yes - PS Plus renews on its own, that is the default, and the charge lands on the renewal date at whatever the price is then rather than what you paid last time. Most people find this out when the receipt email arrives. The setting that controls it is two menus deep and takes about fifteen seconds to change.

Where the renewal date actually lives

The date is visible in three places, and they all show the same thing:

🎮 PS5 Settings → Users and Accounts Account → Payment and Subscriptions → Subscriptions
🕹️ PS4 Settings → Account Management Account Information → PlayStation Subscriptions
🌐 Browser PlayStation account management sign in, open the subscription section

The web route is the one worth bookmarking, because it works without the console powered on - which matters if the renewal is tomorrow and the PS5 is at someone else’s house.

Turning it off does not cancel anything

This is the part that stops people from touching the setting. Switching auto-renew off does not end your subscription, does not remove access, and does not trigger a refund. The subscription runs to the end of the period you already paid for, and then stops instead of billing again.

Auto-renew off is a decision about the next charge, not the current one. Everything you have paid for stays exactly as it is until the date it was always going to end.

It is also reversible. Turn it back on before the end date and the subscription continues uninterrupted.

What happens to the games when it lapses

Three different things, and they are easy to confuse:

  • Games you purchased - unaffected, permanently. A lapsed subscription has nothing to do with them.
  • Monthly games you claimed - stay attached to your account, but stop launching until a subscription is active again. You do not have to reclaim them.
  • Extra and Premium catalogue titles - stop launching immediately, the same way a removed title does.

Cloud saves are retained for a period after a lapse rather than deleted the moment it happens, but this is one to check rather than assume if you are stepping away for a long time. Saves stored locally on the console are not affected either way.

The mistake auto-renew quietly makes for you

Auto-renew keeps whatever plan length you started on. Start on a monthly plan to try the service, forget about it, and it will keep charging monthly indefinitely - which is the most expensive way to buy the same twelve months.

+51%
what twelve monthly PS Plus Extra payments cost over the 12-month plan in the US store, for the identical year of access

In dollars that is about $203.88 against $134.99 - roughly $69 a year for nothing but the convenience of not deciding. The three-month plan sits between the two at about $175.96 a year and is not much better. The pattern repeats everywhere: the UK runs about 44% over, Germany about 52%.

📅 12-month plan (US) $134.99 cheapest per year
📆 3-month plan x4 $175.96 +30%
🗓️ Monthly plan x12 $203.88 +51%

If you are keeping the subscription anyway, the single highest-value thing to do at a renewal is switch the plan length, not cancel.

What turning off auto-renew does not fix

It stops an unwanted charge. It does not change the price of a wanted one. A renewal is billed at the price of your account’s region, and that price varies by a factor of two across the storefronts we track - a gap that repeats every year and has nothing to do with the auto-renew setting.

That is a separate decision with separate mechanics, and we wrote it up in full in avoiding an overpriced PS Plus renewal, with the region-by-region ranking in PS Plus by region, ranked.

PS Prices Hub has Extra and Deluxe tabs next to the game comparison, so the subscription price across every region shows up on the PlayStation Store page you already have open. The cheapest PS Plus region page covers the same ground without installing anything.

Common questions

Does PlayStation Plus renew automatically?

Yes. A subscription bought through the PlayStation Store is set to auto-renew by default, and it renews at the price in force on the renewal date rather than the price you originally paid. Turning it off is a setting, not a cancellation.

Where do I see my PS Plus renewal date?

On PS5: Settings, then Users and Accounts, then Account, then Payment and Subscriptions, then Subscriptions. On PS4: Settings, then Account Management, then Account Information, then PlayStation Subscriptions. On the web, sign in to PlayStation account management and open the subscription section.

What happens if I turn off auto-renew?

Nothing immediately. Your subscription stays fully active until the end of the period you already paid for, and simply does not renew after that. It is reversible at any point before the end date.

Do I lose my games when PS Plus expires?

Games you bought outright are unaffected. Titles from the Extra or Premium catalogue, and monthly games you claimed, stop launching once the subscription lapses - and become playable again if you resubscribe, without needing to reclaim them.

Is a monthly PS Plus plan more expensive than an annual one?

Substantially. In the US store, twelve consecutive monthly Extra payments come to about $203.88 against $134.99 for the 12-month plan - roughly 51% more for the same year of access. The gap is a similar shape in every region we track.

The most useful time to look at any of this is a few weeks before the renewal date, while both levers - plan length and region - are still available. After the charge clears, only one of them is.
