A PS5 console now starts at $649.99, the Pro model at $899.99, and GTA 6 became the first mainstream PS5 title priced at $80. Put a console and two games in a cart today and you’re past $800 before a single subscription is added - worth breaking down where that number actually comes from, and where it isn’t fixed.
Why the console itself got more expensive
Sony raised PS5 hardware prices twice in 2026, citing yen depreciation and a DRAM/NAND supply shortage driven partly by AI datacenter demand. Neither is specific to PlayStation - the same memory shortage has pushed up prices across consumer electronics - but it means the console price is no longer a fixed number you can plan around a year out.
| 🎮 PS5 (standard) | $649.99 |
| 🎮 PS5 Pro | $899.99 |
Games are $70-80 now, not $60
GTA 6 set a new ceiling at $80 for a mainstream PS5 release, and other AAA titles are following. Digital pricing tracks physical pricing closely for new releases, so there’s rarely a discount for buying digital on day one - the gap opens up later, once a game is no longer new.
Where the number stops being fixed: region
Hardware pricing is largely uniform by region (import duties aside), but game and subscription pricing is not - the same title can cost meaningfully different amounts depending on which PSN store region it’s priced in, and that gap doesn’t move in step with hardware prices.

Forza Horizon 5 is a clean example: its cheapest region runs about 55% below the US price - a gap far bigger than any console price increase this year. PS Prices Hub shows a game’s price across enabled regions, converted to your currency, right on the product page, so the region part of the total cost is something you can actually check instead of estimate.
What this means for a realistic budget
The console price is what it is regardless of region. The game price is not - and for someone buying several titles a year, the regional gap adds up to more than the headline console price increase. For the mechanics of why that gap exists at all, see our guide to the cheapest PSN region.
